Dressing Down A Black Dress

Hi all! How are you doing on this May weekend? I've still got the cold I mentioned on Tuesday but am feeling like I will be over it soon. :) I didn't end up working at all this week, but it was actually pleasant to have a break from the craziness of life.

Yesterday I decided it was time to put on a cute outfit and do my hair and makeup so I had something to put on the blog today. Again, I turned to "the pile" that was hanging in my closet, this time using my black sheath dress. The internet came in handy as I looked up ideas. In a couple of minutes I had enough information to pull together a casual outfit.

The first part in dressing down my black dress was my army green military-inspired jacket. Next came the same autumnal-shaded scarf that I featured last weekend; this piece added a more feminine look and extra interest to the outfit. Black leggings were called for, as were my elegant new black flats. Crowing my look is the "Angel Braid" hairdo from Braids, Buns and Twists by Christina Butcher (I highly recommend this book if you enjoy doing hairdos). And that is how I dressed down a little black dress!

And this rose...ah, so beauteous! I had an awkward time of picking it and then I could barely smell it through my congestion, but it added the perfect touch. These yellow roses always remind me of the blossom Mr. Thornton found at Helstone in the North and South movie.........you know you think of these things too! ;)

Do you have a black dress?
Have you ever tried wearing it casually, and if so, how?

For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
Psalm 103:11-13

Praise the Lord!

  1. That's a super cute outfit! For some reason I couldn't tell that the jacket was green at first. It looked more gray than green.

    1. Thanks Faith! :D I guess it kind of does look gray - it's interesting how colors change depending on the time of day and how the camera captures the light.

  2. I love the outfit!! It looks really great and surprisingly very casual. I do have a black dress but I fear it can only be dressy..

    1. Thanks Mariya! :) Ah, yeah, sometimes fabrics and styles make things decidedly less casual.

  4. Oh, glad to hear your cold is clearing up, my friend! A quiet week at home sounds so lovely! Sometimes after a bout of being inside and wrapped in pajamas or comfy clothes for too long, one long to dress up and do a touch of make-up! You did a lovely job of creating a pretty, casual outfit and I love how you did your hair!
Aww! I just love that part in North and South...so romantic and yet so simplistic and touching:)
Have a blessed Sunday - sending you a hug today, dear Paige!

  5. You look lovely Paige! I never succeed in dressing down my black dress. Not matter how I try it always seems too nice. So I keep it in my closet for weddings and graduations.

  6. That's a nice outfit, Paige! I have a black skirt, but never have tried wearing it casually.
Nice rose. ;) (I put a winking face, because that's the first part of my name ... "Rosalyn". Lots of people say it "Rozalyn" which I don't like! :D) I didn't think of the blossom that Mr. Thorton found in North and South, cause I've never watched it! Just saw a couple scenes. :)

Aaah, okay! I actually was saying it "Rozalyn" but now I know. You have a very pretty name. :)

    2. Thanks. I usually correct people when they said my name wrong. :) I'll forgive you! ;) haha! There isn't many people who are named Rosalyn, so that's one of the reasons people say it wrong.

  8. I love how versatile black dresses are! You can wear them in any season, accessorize them a million different ways. The scarf is perfect, by the way and compliments the olive green scarf so well. :)
