Guest Post: Costume Inspired Dress by Jill

Image
Hi, my name is Jill and I blog over at the Wizard of Odds and Ends , my craft/fashion/chatty blog. First off, I want to thank Paige for asking me to do a guest post! I am thrilled to have this opportunity! I've been trying to figure out what to write about for nearly a week. Lately, I've been writing a Handmade Wardrobe Series on my blog where I try to build two or three outfits around one article of clothing that I made. It has been challenging, but SO much fun. Today, I decided I'd show an earlier piece of sewing that I did.

Historical Fashion How-To: Regency

Image
Hi all! How was your Independence Day? Mine was full of fun and good eats with friends. I have a patriotic outfit to share with you at some point, but guess what!? I'm up to me ears in outfits that I need to post! Of course, this isn't necessarily a problem. ;) For now, we'll just hop in our fashion time machine and take a look at the Regency era.

Historical Fashion How-To ~ Georgian Era (Late 1700's)

Image
It's high time for another historical fashion post! :) Today's time period is what is commonly known as the Georgian era, when England was ruled by the earlier King Georges. My costume study focuses on the late 18th century during the rule of King George the III.

Historical Fashion How To ~ Middle Ages

Greetings, fair ladies! We're about to dust off our time machine and study another era of fashion history. This time, we shall completely leave the modern era as we explore the middle ages. This is one of my favorite eras in history, and I hope that by the time we're done, you'll be as excited about it as I am! The Middle Ages

Historical Fashion How-To ~ 1980's

Image
So, I know that I said the 70's was the last decade of the 20th century fashion I would be posting on, but due to popular demand (okay, two people...) I have delved into the world of 80's style! Many thanks go to my Mom for styling my outfits for this post - she went to high school in this era, and therefore qualifies as an expert on the fashion. ;) Put on your baggy sweater and big white shades, and join me for another fun look at a decade of style!

Historical Fashion How-To ~ 1970's

Image
Hello all! Our tour through 20th century fashion comes to a close with the decade we are looking into today. However, the series itself has certainly not met its end! From now on we will be digging deeper into history, imitating the looks of earlier centuries. I won't get ahead of myself though - first we must peer into the styles of that wacky decade known as the 70's! 1970's

Historical Fashion How-To ~ 1950's Part 2

Image
Hello dolls! Are you ready to see more retro fashions? Well, I certainly have some to show you today, so put on your glad rags and let's go back in time! 1950's     There are really many options  when it comes to dressing in 50's inspired fashion. You can wear a dress, a skirt, or even pants. You can put on a sheath dress or a full-skirted frock. You can sport just about any shoe, and have a variety of hairdos to choose from. When coming up with attire for my 50's posts, there were many ideas swirling around! Below is the second set of outfits that I put together which show different styles of the era (if you didn't see the first two outfits, view here ).    When I came to this part of the series, I knew that this coat must somehow be incorporated. Ever since coming into my possession, it has reminded me of the 50's. For this outfit, I wore it over a boat-neck sweater and pencil skirt that had the flavor of ...

Historical Fashion How-To ~ 1950's Part One

Image
"Part one?!" you ask. Yes, we have come to one of my favorite decades of 20th century fashion, and my inspiration abounds. Why not throw in a two-parter to keep the series going as long as possible? ;) Without further ado I give you part one of our journey into the 1950's. 1950's                             The 1950's is a decade that we in the U.S. often look on as being the "good old days" of American existence. Our economy was good, the World War was a memory, families flourished in comfortable homes, and children played safely in their neighborhoods. However, beneath all the apparent ease were hard times and social revolutions. Racial segregation, the "forgotten war" in Korea, and the rise of subcultures were also part of the era.    The different aspects of life had an affect on what people wore. The typical woman of the 1950's wore ga...

Historical Fashion How-To ~ 1920's

Image
How do you do, ladies? Unfortunately, I'm home sick. There's a bright side though - I've had plenty of time to research and put together another post for the Historical Fashion How-To series! Today's era is the 1920's. Let's get right to it! :D 1920's         The 1920's was a time of massive transformation for society. Prohibition, women's independence, and extravagance defined the decade. Women's new ideals reflected in their clothing styles. Hemlines were the shortest that they had ever been, and the feminine figure eventually left the scene with straight-lined dresses.   I believe that several aspects of the clothing in this era display the great moral decline of society that was occurring. As in most times, however, there were also some beautiful styles to gain inspiration from. Long coats, handkerchief hemlines, and futuristic Art Deco designs were all popular...

New Series!!! Historical Fashion How-To ~ 1910's

Image
Hello all! I am excited to present to you the opening post of Sunday Best's first series - it's called Historical Fashion How-To ! In this series, I will be showing you how to copy specific eras of fashion for costume parties or your own personal enjoyment. The goal is to give you ideas of how to use either what is already in your closet, or just waiting for you to purchase at your local second-hand store. My plan is to explore several decades of the 20th century in chronological order, then tackle some even older looks. ;) )    In school, history never seemed dry and boring to me. On the contrary, I found it fascinating. The clothes of bygone days have always intrigued me, and studying past times is more exciting when I can imagine what the people were wearing. As a result, I have made a bit of a study of historical costume. This blog is now the perfect platform for sharing my knowledge, as well as learning more (and getti...
