Butter + Navy // Singular Singleness

Hello to you, right in the midst of your July week! I hope you enjoy today's outfit, as well as some thoughts I was inspired to write.

Yesterday's outfit featured a simple pairing of an embroidered butter yellow skirt with a navy and white striped cardigan. Brown flats completed the look. As it was a bit cooler than I was hoping, a denim jacket (not pictured) kept me warm for a good part of the day. The colors of this simple outfit seem just right for a not-too-hot summer's day.

Singleness is a strange thing. At times it looks like a glittering horizon of adventure and independence. It seems that God has a big, exciting, challenging plan for us. At other times, it puts an ache in our hearts to be loved by an amazing man. We see our peers coupling off and feel awkward. We just might have the urge to listen to solo piano music.

If you're anything like me, you already know a lot about this subject from various resources. We are to give our lives completely to God. We can serve Him in ways we can't when we are married. When we have crushes we are to give them to the Lord and recognize that the object of our admiration could be someone else's husband. These things may indeed stay us in good stead through our singleness journey.

There are a few things we weren't prepared for though. What do we do when our unmarried time becomes a stressful whirlwind of things we won't have time for if we had husbands? What do we do when giving up our crushes is a lot harder than it sounds? What if the big, exciting plans we're expecting don't seem to be unfolding, and our lives begin to feel dull? What if we begin to have doubts about relationships while still desiring them?

Singleness is a singular thing. We can read all about it in our teens and enter our adult years still not knowing what it all means. No one that can tell us exactly what singleness should look like in our individual lives or foresee what emotions and trials we will face.

I don't have all the answers, but I do know this: as with other aspects of our walk in Christ, we must follow God's word and trust that the He is holding the road maps of our lives. We may or may not make the trip with a husband by our side, and more or less of our life may be spent with this man. However, as long as the Lord is driving, we need never doubt the journey.

Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.
I Corinthians 2:9

  1. Thanks for your words, Paige! I especially appreciated that verse.

On a completely different note, I was wondering if you would consider posting about how to put outfits together and utilizing everything in your closet. I am so clueless at times when it comes to clothes and fashion. :)

  5. Paige, this was exactly what I needed to read today! I'm in that season of life where it seems all my friends, siblings, acquaintances...are getting married and having children and sometimes it's hard to feel like I'm getting left in the dust. It's weird because, like you said, sometimes my life is full of possibilities that wouldn't necessarily be possible when/if I ever get married. But then sometimes it seems like there's nothing ahead of me...

Ultimately we must trust God and delight ourselves in him. I think God makes us restless to reveal our weaknesses to ourselves and make us realize that our love for Him can never be conditional on what He does or doesn't give us.

    1. So glad this encouraged you! It seems like our age is when these issues start hitting hard..."Wait, I could be married right now."
That is a good point! Thanks for sharing. :)

  8. Oh, bless you for sharing such precious encouragement, dear Paige!

It is such a joy to know a single young lady like you, even though it is just through the lovely world of blogging... Many of my friends have either been in, or are entering into relationships and obviously don't understand just what a blessing it is to have the assurance that the Lord is Sovereign and has our lives in the palm of His mighty hand...

It is not always easy, but He is working everything out for each of us, and if we can trust Him with other areas of our lives, surely we can trust Him with our futures too?

Thank you for sharing such lovely encouragement, dear Paige!

And oh my! How gorgeous is your outfit...so summery and cheerful! I just love it!

    Sending hugs your way!

  10. Lovely outfit (as usual)! I like the playground setting. A few years back I told my siblings I would probably be swinging till I was 20; well, that proved true! I've always enjoyed the swings, but haven't done it for a while now. I'm turning 21 shortly, so I'll have to find a good place to go swinging again to prove I'm not getting old. ;)

Oh, and I really should have warned you, posting about singleness is dangerous. For example see Caitlin's blog:

    Watch out, Paige!

Overall good post though; I like the scripture verse you chose to end it with.

*cough* You really must find a swing before your birthday though! It is still fun. :)
