Something New

   Well, so much for getting back on schedule *sheepish grin*. For varying reasons, I didn't get a post up this weekend. However, I am back and excited to share with you this November evening (or morning, for my friends across the globe :). This isn't exactly a fashion related post, but I do hope you will enjoy it! Without further ado...

    Take a look at my new instrument! Some of you may be wondering what on earth this is, but those of you familiar with folk music may recognize it. This, my readers, is a hammered dulcimer. Excepting a recorder from childhood, it is the first instrument that has ever belonged solely to me. Lord willing, it will also be the first that I truly know how to play!

   My dulcimer dreams originated earlier this year around the time my family watched a docudrama about the late Christian artist, Rich Mullins. After watching the film, Mom and I did some more research about him. He was an excellent dulcimer player, and learning about him got me interested in the instrument. As time went on, I played many YouTube videos of dulcimer music.

  Recently, Mom and I looked up hammered dulcimers online. One evening, Dad got involved in the research. Next, Mom and I went on a quest to our local music stores. The third store had a used dulcimer, just like one we had been looking at online, and for a much lower price than a new one. Two days later, I brought home a wonderful early birthday/Christmas present! Thanks Mom and Dad! Thanks God!

   As you may have noticed, my dulcimer isn't the only new thing. Yes, I have a fresh new hairstyle! In the above photos, my locks were perfectly straightened. Since the cut I've been wearing them curly, and it gives me quite the Parisian girl look! Hopefully, you shall see that style in the next post.

 Have you ever heard of a hammered dulcimer?
Do you play an instrument?

 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord!
Psalm 140:4-6

  1. I love your new haircut, Paige! And the sound of a hammered dulcimer is lovely! I've always been fond of the instrument since I discovered it's sound in bluegrass songs (always been a favorite of mine to listen to). :-)

    Hope you're having a lovely week thus far!
    God Bless!

  5. It looks like a beautiful instrument. When you mentioned tuning it on FB it sounded like quite a task--46 strings?! It's enough work to tune a couple 6-stringed guitars! Those who tune dulcimers have my admiration!

    1. Haha, yes! The strings are doubled for a chorus effect, like a mandolin (according to wikipedia). It sounds cool, but takes a lot of time to tune.

  6. I've fiddled a bit with a hammer dulcimer before, they're quote popular where I live in the Southern mountains, but I don't actually know how to play one myself. I love the sound though! It can be oriental, folk, or just about anything the musician desires if played correctly. I'd love to learn one some day...but then again, I'm not sure there is any instrument I wouldn't be interested in learning. Have fun with your new "toy"! I'm sure you'll learn it well.
    I love your new hairstyle! The straight short-ish hair with bangs looks very chic on you.
