Leather + Teal // College?

It's Saturday again (okay, it's probably Sunday by the time you're reading this ;)) and I'm here to show you an outfit that includes two beautiful brand new items that I acquired last mongth. Oddly enough, these two items have something in common...they're both faux leather!

I've been wearing my new jacket nearly every day since receiving it from my parents on my birthday. The fit, the color and the style are all just right! Not only that, it just plain makes me feel really cool and stylish when I wear it. ;) Another item I've been using daily is my new purse. You see, it was high time for a new purse, as the one my mom made was wearing out and had a stain from an unfortunate incident with a pen...*cough* This one has a cute shape and can be worn on my shoulder or cross-body. Despite the fact that the colors of the purse and jacket nearly match I've been wearing them together...a lot.
The rest of today's outfit was actually all built around a pair of teal tights. After another combination and then some indecision, I settled on my poufy little floral skirt and a striped t-shirt. I then added a white cardi for warmth and a gray belt for looks. Of course, the new jacket and purse were thrown on when it was time to go out on the town. In this outfit, I enjoyed a belated and delicous birthday lunch with my parents.

Ready to move on to a more serious topic? There's a specific subject that I'd love us to discuss here on Sunday Best. That topic is *drumroll please* ... COLLEGE. In conservative Christian circles such as those I'm in, it can be a source of some contention. There are so many different viewpoints on the subject. So, I'd like to ask you, reader, what do you think about college?
Do you think college is a good idea for everyone or just for some people? Is it better for guys than girls? Should you go just for the sake of going or should you have an entire career planned out before stepping foot in an establishment? Please let me know what you think in the comments below but please do not debate or argue with anyone. At the moment I just want to hear what everyone thinks. Later on, I'll do a post on my own opinion and you can have another chance to comment on the topic. If you are a college-age young person, it would also be great if you could do the poll* provided on the sidebar. Remember, I enjoy hearing from you! Thanks! :)

* I'm sorry the text is so hard to read, try selecting it to see it in better contrast.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,

And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

  1. Awesome outfit, Paige! I *love* leather and the teal looks great with it! I think I voted in your poll, but the font color for it is very hard to read.

I think college works for some people, and for others it is a bad idea.

Yeah, I'm sorry it's difficult to read. :( Layout wasn't giving me the option of editing it for some reason.

College???????? ohhhhh you mean Univeristy! :-) Well, I'm attending uni next year and studying Primary Education. I think everyone makes their own decisions about whether or not to attend, if people choose not too that's their choice and I'm fine with it..... hmmmmm I don't know what to say actually.. Sorry!

Hee-hee, here we have junior college and university, so I say "college" to cover it all. And don't feel bad, I appreciate your sharing what you did. :)

  4. Very cute outfit!

College...Well, before last year, Becca and I didn't think we would go. Lord willing, we want to be homemakers and wives someday, and we didn't want the debt college usually brings. Because along with that debt, if we would get married, that would force us to stay in that career to make enough money to keep paying off student loans. The little Bible school we're headed off to now is a wonderful price, and we'll get to hang out with like minded young people learning about God's word! Plus, our dad initiated it, and as a family, we've decided to do this.
A Really helpful book we read was "Chucking College" which gives great perspective on college, and college alternatives.

Also, thank you so much for sharing your personal experience and decision.
I'll have to look up that book; I've not heard of it. :)

  5. I think college is a great option if you're the type of person who just loves learning, especially if you have a specific area of study in mind. As a homebody who ended up going way far out of state to college, I also really appreciate the range of opportunities and interaction with people of diverse backgrounds and ideas that college has offered. Though part of me would have preferred to stick with my parents at home and attend a local community college or online program, I think going outside of my box for a time will ultimately be more beneficial. I'm a big believer in the value of being able to accept people for who they are, regardless of whether they see eye to eye with me on lifestyles and beliefs, and I think going off to college for a few years is a good way to widen your worldview.

Even if you intend to get married and be a stay-at-home mom after college, I think college can still be beneficial. There's the whole expanded-worldview thing I mentioned above, plus the actual college education is good. If you love learning/what you're studying, the academic atmosphere will be challenging and exciting. It's FUN. And the knowledge you gain will be passed down to your future kids, whether through direct teaching or less obvious means. If you're really worried about your course of study being relevant to your life plans (assuming the stay-at-home homeschooling mom thing here), major in something like early childhood ed, nursing, or religion that can have ready applications in your home life.

And another thing: college leaves your options open. For ease I'll just use my own example. I'm going to college with the intention of having a career of some sort working in museums or similar organizations. I also want to get married and have a large family. The two are not mutually exclusive; museum jobs can be flexible and low-key, or part-time, and I don't want a high-profile career anyway. But I'd also be happy as a stay-at-home mom, if that's how it turns out, but at this point I don't know how exactly my life will play out. I could never meet the right guy and get married, in which case I'll be able to support myself with a job I also find fulfilling. Or I could end up with a dozen kids, in which case I'll put my education to use in educating them.

One last thing is to also not fear going to a public university rather than an institution with a specific religious bent. Wherever you go, you'll be able to find like-minded people and avoid mixing with the wrong crowd. Some public schools are different than others - the state flagship I attend is waaaay more conservative than some other public unis my friends attend - but all will have religious organizations and active churches nearby. I've found it very easy to avoid engaging much with people who spend their college time drinking and partying, instead finding friends whose views more closely match my own. College has been a great experience for me, even going halfway across the country (due to available scholarships and programs), and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

Hope this helps. I've enjoyed reading your blog the past couple months.

  6. That outfit is beautiful, Paige! I LOVE the leather jacket...and to answer your thought provoking question, I think college is a good choice for most (if not all) people. In this day 'n age, you need college to get a stable job with a stable income. Even though my wish for the future is to be a stay-at-home-mom and wife, I am already thinking about college! (And I am only a sophomore in high school...) I have an eye on this Christian university in my area, and Lord willing, I hope to go there (and also Lord-willing, get a good scholarship!) But, having said this, in my opinion, guys should absolutely have a degree. As providers of the families, men should at least have some foundation of education to at least have a chance at a good job. This is something I will definitely think about more now that you mentioned it. ;) Thank you, Paige!

  7. Very cute outfit!
As for my personal views on college (since you asked)
I don't think it has anything to do boy/girl, but I do think if a person is going to spend time, money and energy on a degree, they should know what they want to do BEFORE they enroll. I've seen too many people just "go to go" (or worse, to meet a spouse).
I think it's also important to be realistic (I.E not getting a degree in some obscure field where they could never get a job). Anyway, my two cents!

  8. My computer was acting up earlier, so if this is my third identical comment (cringe) I'm so sorry.
My view, is that college, with the proper mindset and environment is perfectly fine. Even if you don't necessarily have a career path in mind, getting a two-year degree in a useful subject will prove to future employers that you can stick to something and get it done. Of course, I wouldn't want to drown in debt, but I think it's certainly worth a look at scholarships and other conduits. So, overall, I believe that college affords both opportunity and invaluable experience, both in the now and later down the road; but I'm also perfectly fine with those that do not need it for their career and choose not to go. It should be an individual decision.

I love your outfit, especially that jacket :)

  9. I'll have to say go for it. College is for everyone, and it's really not a culture thing. It's a stepping stone to your future. That's what college is in education and work terms, something to have to get yourself some better opportunities in employment. And if you're worried about finance and choices, then there are agencies that can give you a helping hand. So yes, fill up those forms. Anyway, thanks for sharing that! I wish you all the best!
