Style School: Indie

   How do you do folks? It's Saturday and that means it's time for.........Style School! I have an idea for one more post in the series after this, and then it just might be the end! We shall see. ;) Now, onward to the style that seems to best fit my own outfits...

Indie

    Indie is short for "independent", and can describe music, films, design, and fashion. An indie person is not part of a large company - they produce their work independently. For the sake of this post, I will just be talking about clothing.

     Though centered on being independent, there are certain recurring themes in indie fashion. A woman dressing in this style will prefer to wear vintage and second-hand items or pieces from independent clothing designers. She uses retro and boho elements, inspired by past eras. She may try unique color and print combinations. She can be eclectic, drawing from many sources of inspiration rather than the mainstream. A girl wearing indie style values her individuality.

Examples of Indie Pieces: Fit-and-flare retro dress; Graphic Tee; Floral skirt or dress; Cardigan; Opaque tights; Over-sized scarf; Brimmed hat; Oxford shoes; Ankle Booties

  This outfit isn't the indiest indie outfit there is, but as long as this style is about not having rules, I didn't break any fashion laws. ;) I ended up wearing it for a rainy walk downtown with my mom while we waited for our car's oil change. At that point I was also wearing a hat and a jacket as mom and I huddled beneath an umbrella on our way to the coffee shop and bookstore!

   My skirt is a beautifully cut garment with a velvety floral design; though not from an independent designer or consignment store, it does lend a unique retro flair. With this skirt, I wore a pink cardigan and purple camisole. Over these, I put on one of my favorite scarves, an over-sized polka-dot piece. Purple knee-socks and black boots kept me insulated, while a low ponytail hairdo made the finishing touch.

Outfit Details: Cardigan ~ Consignment Store; Camisole ~ Thrift Store?; Skirt ~ Kohl's; Scarf ~ Gift Boots ~ Sears

   Enjoy the rest of your weekend, friends! And Happy Valentine's Day! May you remember to love others and think upon the love of God.

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
Mercy and truth go before Your face.
 Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!
They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.
Psalm 89:14-15

  2. So, Indie means you mix what you want to form your own style right? You use pieces that don't normally pair together and and make them work to fit your tastes? Is that true?

    I just wanted to say, I love how you end each post with a verse or two. I always find that inspiring, and more often than not the verses speak directly into an area of my life I've been thinking about or struggling with. So thank you for that. :D
