Historical Fashion How-To ~ 1980's

So, I know that I said the 70's was the last decade of the 20th century fashion I would be posting on, but due to popular demand (okay, two people...) I have delved into the world of 80's style! Many thanks go to my Mom for styling my outfits for this post - she went to high school in this era, and therefore qualifies as an expert on the fashion. ;) Put on your baggy sweater and big white shades, and join me for another fun look at a decade of style!

1980's

The 1980's was a decade of prosperity for the United States, which reflected in the bold and glamorous fashion statements that were made. Gone were the hippie looks of the socially  troubled 60's 70's. In place of kaftans and tribal prints were puffed sleeves, shoulder pads, leggings, and oversized sweaters. Women were now well established in the workplace, and showed their freedom by power dressing in suits with enormous shoulder pads.

For the first look, I put a brightly colored checked tunic over skinny jeans. To make the look essentially 80's, I put thick socks over my pants, wore purple Converse, and secured a red belt over my tunic - bold, mismatched colors were apparently all the rage! A pearl necklace worn as a bracelet, and a mauve scarf worn as a big hair bow accessorized my outfit. Of course, my look wouldn't have been complete without my hair blown out in a big, frizzy 'do. Did I feel ridiculous? Yes, but it was fun. ;)

My next outfit also hearkens back to the bright colors of the era, as it features a blue-green sweater, mustard tights, and striped legwarmers. A big belt, pearl necklace, and white sunglasses (Mom tells me that everyone wore those back in the day) pull together the look. My big hair is now pulled up in a high side-ponytail, which was also a popular look. Turquoise and pearl clip-on earrings complete my outfit, adding a bit of glam sparkle.

Let me know what you think of my 80's styles.. It is definitely not my favorite fashion era, but it was pretty fun to dress up in these looks. Well, I hope you have all had a blessed and productive week and will enjoy a superb Sunday!
